FAQs

Straight answers to fair questions.

If it's not covered here, ask us directly — we'd rather explain than leave you guessing.

General
What areas do you cover?

We're based in Newcastle upon Tyne and work across the North East — all of Tyne and Wear (Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North and South Tyneside), County Durham (Durham, Chester-le-Street, Consett, Seaham, Bishop Auckland) and south-east Northumberland (Cramlington, Blyth, Ashington, Morpeth, Ponteland, Hexham). For larger projects we'll travel a little further, including Darlington and Teesside. If you're not sure whether we cover your postcode, run your job through the online quote tool or drop us a message — if we can't get to you, we'll say so straight away rather than waste your time.

What does "three trades under one roof" actually mean?

It means our plumbing, heating and air conditioning engineers, our flooring and tiling fitters, and our painters and decorators are all part of D&R — not subcontractors we've never met. We plan jobs together, sequence the trades properly, and one person is accountable to you for the whole result.

Do you take on small jobs, or only full renovations?

Both. We're just as happy repainting a single room or replacing a bathroom tap as we are refurbishing a whole flat. Smaller jobs are often how customers get to know us before trusting us with something bigger — we're fine with that.

Are you insured?

Yes. We're fully insured, and we're happy to show you proof of cover before any work starts. Every job is also backed by our workmanship guarantee, confirmed in writing at handover.

Who will actually be in my home?

Our own tradespeople. You'll know who's coming and when, and you'll have one named point of contact throughout the job. We work tidily, protect your floors and furniture, and clear up at the end of every working day.

Pricing & quotes
How does the online quote work — and do you really not take my details?

Really. You pick a trade, narrow down to your specific job, answer a few short questions — sizes, materials, access — and get an instant price range on screen. We don't ask for your name, email or phone number, and there's no follow-up call. It exists so you can plan with honest numbers before deciding whether to talk to us.

Is the online price range binding?

It's an honest estimate, not a contract — no one can promise a final price without seeing the job. But we keep the ranges realistic and up to date, and most fixed quotes land inside the range shown. If a site visit reveals something the tool couldn't know about, we'll explain exactly what and why before you commit to anything.

What could make the final quote differ from the online range?

Usually things hidden from view: rotten subfloors under old flooring, corroded pipework, walls that need more prep than expected, or awkward access. If we find anything like that during the survey, it goes into the fixed quote before you sign — not onto an invoice afterwards. Once work starts, nothing is added without your written approval.

How do payments work? Do you ask for money up front?

For most jobs we take a deposit to book your slot and cover materials, with the balance staged against progress and a final payment only after your handover walkthrough. The exact schedule is set out in your written quote before you agree to anything, so there are no surprises mid-job.

Are your prices inclusive of VAT?

Every quote we issue states clearly whether VAT applies and shows the total you'll actually pay. We don't do headline prices with the real number hiding in the small print.

Plumbing, Heating & A/C
Can you replace my boiler, and how long does it take?

Yes — boiler replacements and full central heating work are core jobs for us. A straight swap is typically done in a day; moving the boiler or upgrading pipework and radiators usually takes two to three. All gas work is carried out by appropriately registered engineers, and we'll always confirm the exact scope and timeline in your quote.

Do you install air conditioning in homes?

We do. Wall-mounted split systems are the most common choice for bedrooms, lofts and home offices, and most single-room installations are completed in a day. We'll advise on unit position, running costs and whether your property needs any permissions before we quote.

If you renovate my bathroom, who does the tiling and decorating?

We do — that's the point. Our plumbers do the first fix and sanitaryware, our own tilers do the walls and floor, and our decorators finish the ceiling and woodwork. One schedule, one quote, one team responsible for how it all looks and works together.

Floor & Wall Covering
What types of flooring do you fit?

Porcelain and ceramic tiling, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), laminate, engineered wood and solid wood, plus wall tiling and panelling. Just as important, we prepare properly first — levelling compounds, new subfloors or ply where needed — because no floor finish survives a bad base.

Can I supply my own tiles or flooring?

Of course. Plenty of customers fall in love with a specific tile and we're happy to fit it — we'll tell you how much to order, including a sensible allowance for cuts and breakages. We can also supply materials through our trade accounts if you'd rather we handle everything.

Do you do wall panelling?

Yes — shaker-style, tongue-and-groove, slat and picture-frame panelling are all regular jobs for us, usually finished by our own decorators so the paintwork matches the rest of the room. It's a popular way to lift hallways, bedrooms and living rooms without a full renovation.

Painting & Decorating
Can you paint while we're living in the house?

Yes — most of our decorating is done in occupied homes. We work room by room, seal off work areas, use low-odour paints where it matters, and put each room back together before moving on. You'll never come home to your whole house under dust sheets.

How much of decorating is preparation?

Honestly? Most of it. Filling, sanding, caulking and priming are what make paintwork last — the topcoat just gets the credit. It's why our quotes spell out the prep included, and why we won't quote a price that only works if we skip it.
